We are using present continuous when we are doing something now, we are something doing and we are not finished yet.
I am writing an article. (I have not finished article yet)
The family is eating the the dinner now.
When we are using present simple:
We us present simple to talk about things in general. It means that something is happens all the time or repeatedly.
I learn English every morning.
In English language there are more tenses then in my native Czech language. If you are in similar situation, you are maybe disappointed about so many tenses. But after you learn it the tenses make sense for you and you will start to like English Tenses.
The main different is that we are using present continuous for something what we do right now. Present simple mean that we do something repeatedly or it is generally true.
