In English language there are more tenses then in my native Czech language. If you are in similar situation, you are maybe disappointed about so many tenses. But after you learn it the tenses make sense for you and you will start to like English Tenses.
We use past continuous when we are talking about something in past and we describing what we did in certain time. I was doing something – I was in the middle of doing something at certain time. The situation had already started before this time but not finished yet.
Past simple is past tense and we use it when something was in past and is finished. Very often the past simple verbs end in – ed (regular verbs). But there is some irregulars verbs which have their own form.
